What exactly is Hive Fives?

Put simply, Hive Fives is a digital peer-to-peer recognition tool.

And how does it work?

Employees can access Hive Fives from within a survey, via email and SMS reminders or through the employee homepage.

An employee can give a Hive Five by simply selecting a colleague via the drop-down box, selecting the category that aligns with the Hive Five and writing a message in the “Explain Why” box (emojis available, of course 🙌 ). They can then decide if they’d like the Hive Five to be publicly displayed on the status board, and add another Hive Five if they wish, before hitting “Submit feedback”.

Hive Fives are an incredibly powerful way to embed values, behaviours and a culture of recognition in your organisation. Success deserves to be celebrated!

To turn on Hive Fives or customise your categories, simply contact your Customer Success Manager

Employees’ identities are confidential in Hive surveys… what about Hive Fives?

While Hive surveysOpen Door feedback and Messenger are confidential, Hive Fives are not. To recognise another colleague, you must know who you’re recognising, right? And of course, when you get praise, it’s nice to know who you got it from—and every achievement can be recognised and celebrated across your organisation! Having a name against a Hive Five also means there’s no opportunity for the channel to be abused.

How do employees receive Hive Fives?

The recipient will get an email notification that will take them to their personal Hive Fives dashboard. There, they will be able to view the Hive Five, along with the name of the sender, the category and the personal message. While they’re in their Hive Fives dashboard, they will also be able to see all of their previous Hive Fives too.

What can I see in the Hive Fives admin dashboard?

The admin dashboard displays how many Hive Fives have been received, what percentage included a comment (not just a Hive Five category), distribution by month and category, and top recipients.

Can I customise the Hive Fives categories?

Absolutely. Customised Hive Fives categories let you link all Hive Fives to your values or mission. This is a really powerful way to embed values and behaviours in the culture of your organisation by creating values-driving recognition for everyone to see. It could even be used as evidence for accreditations like Investors In People!

Can I add the logos we use for our values?

Each customised Hive Five category can be assigned an icon, so if you have any artwork for your values, we can really bring them to life! If not, we can help you source some icons that would work for you.

How do I review Hive Fives from a certain time frame, e.g. last month or last week?

Simply select the start date and end date, and any feedback received during that time will appear. Some of our customers use this date range to review Hive Fives on a weekly or monthly basis—simple but powerful!

How do I see who has received the most Hive Fives?

You can see all recipients in the “Top Recipients” section as a leaderboard. Some customers use this to praise those who received the most recognition, or even designate an ‘Employee of the Month’-type reward.

How do I look at Hive Fives from a particular segment of employees?

Just like survey responses, you can filter Hive Fives using your bespoke attributes to dig deeper, compare the distribution and create action plans at a local level.

I’ve seen a great Hive Five I’d like to respond to… can I?

Hive Messenger allows you to begin a conversation with an employee. Whether it’s asking for more detail, thanking them or simply giving them a pat on the back—just click the envelope button to start chatting!

Can my team or other people managers to see Hive Fives?

Of course! We know some of you want various stakeholders to work on/have visibility of feedback; it’s absolutely vital for action-planning at a local level. Whether it’s your Exec team or a Head of Reward—as long as they’ve been set up with the right permissions, you’re good to go!

Want a manager to only access Hive Fives but nothing else in Hive? No problem, with flexible feature access you can ensure your people only see what you want them to.

You can even tag the relevant managers into the conversation with Hive Messenger and share internal notes that aren’t visible to the employee.

Can I share Hive Fives with the rest of the organisation?

The Hive Fives status board is a live feed that allows you to publicly display all the wonderful Hive Fives that have been shared across your organisation; success deserves to be celebrated!

By clicking the “Status Board” button on the top right of the Hive Fives feed, a people manager can generate a link that can be used to display Hive Fives on a TV screen in the office, included in any internal comms and newsletters, or directly shared with employees to be bookmarked and browsed at their leisure.

Can Hive Fives be hidden from the status board?

While shining a light on all the great things happening at your organisation is invaluable, it’s not always appropriate. Whether the Hive Five isn’t written in an appropriate way, congratulates someone on their sick dance moves at the Christmas party, or the recipient simply doesn’t want everyone to see—it’s easy to hide it!

For a Hive Five to display on the status board, the sender, recipient and people manager must all agree to do so. By default Hive Fives will be displayed publicly, however this can be changed by getting in touch with the Support Squad.

The choice to not publicly display a Hive Five can be completed by...

  • Sender: When a Hive Five is submitted, the sender is able to mark it as private/public via a toggle. Making the Hive Five private will stop it appearing on a public board, but the recipient will still receive a notification to let them know that they have been recognised. The Hive Five will also still appear in the dashboard for people managers to view.

  • Recipient: When an employee receives a Hive Five, they are able to amend the privacy from their personal Hive Five dashboard by clicking the eye icon. This will prevent it from appearing on a public board, but it will still appear in the Hive dashboard for people managers to view.

  • People Manager: People Managers can make any of the Hive Fives private to prevent them from appearing on a public board by clicking the eye icon on the individual Hive Five similar to the recipient.

Can I download the graph/table to include in a presentation?

Of course! You can download the “Distribution By Month” graph and “Distribution By Category” table by simply clicking the “Download image” button.

How do I export Hive Fives out of Hive?

Simply download Hive Fives as a CSV file ready to upload to Excel or any other compatible programme. Remember, any filters (department, location, function) you have selected will be applied to your CSV—so if you’d like to see all of them, make sure you’ve cleared all filters!
