What the Questions tab is for
Your survey dashboard gives you the big picture. The Questions tab gives you the detail behind it.
It takes every question you asked and puts it on its own page, with the right analysis for that type of question. So instead of scanning a wall of numbers, you look at one question at a time and get a clear answer to three things: what did people say, how does that compare across the organisation, and is it getting better or worse?
You don't need a background in survey analytics to use it. The Questions tab does the interpretation for you — it tells you where your score sits, what counts as good, and what's changed since last time.
How the page is laid out
There are three areas on the page:
The filter sidebar (left) — your usual attribute filters. When you open a question, the sidebar collapses automatically so you get the full width of the screen for your results. It's not gone — click the expand arrow whenever you want to change your filters, then collapse it again.
The question list (middle) — every question in your survey. Search it, scroll it, filter it, or sort it by score to jump straight to your highest or lowest scoring questions.
Your results (right) — the detail for whichever question you've selected.
💡 Tip: Turn on Show previews in the question list to display the average score and question category next to each question. It's the fastest way to spot where to look first.
Understanding your scores
For scale questions, the Hive platform shows you two different views of the same data. They answer different questions, and they use different bands — this is the bit that catches people out, so it's worth 30 seconds.
Your average score tells you how positive the group was overall.
|
Band |
Score |
|
Negative |
0 – 3 |
|
Slightly negative |
3 – 5 |
|
Moderate |
5 – 7 |
|
Positive |
7 – 10 |
Percentage favourable tells you how many people were positive — it counts heads rather than averaging scores.
|
Group |
Score given |
|
Favourable |
6 – 10 |
|
Neutral |
5 |
|
Unfavourable |
0 – 4 |
Why the numbers are different: the average score bands describe the mood of a whole group. The favourable split describes individual people. A score of 6 is a favourable answer from one person, but a team averaging 6 sits in the moderate band overall. Use the average score to see where you stand, and the favourable split to see how divided your people are — a moderate average made up of lots of very happy and very unhappy people is a very different story to one where everyone sits in the middle.
What you'll see for each question type
Scale questions
- Average score, with a marker showing where it sits on the 0–10 scale
- Score distribution — how many people chose each point on the scale
- Percentage favourable, broken down into favourable, neutral and unfavourable
- Breakdown by segment — pick an attribute and compare average score, percentage favourable and response rate across every segment within it
- Score over time — the trend for this question across your previous surveys
eNPS and NPS questions
Your eNPS score runs from -100 to +100 and is built from three groups:
|
Group |
Score given |
|
Promoters |
9 – 10 |
|
Passives |
7 – 8 |
|
Detractors |
0 – 6 |
To help you judge your result, scores fall into these bands:
|
Band |
Score |
|
Concerning |
Below -10 |
|
Typical |
-10 to +20 |
|
Very good |
+21 to +40 |
|
Outstanding |
+41 and above |
Just like scale questions, you can break your NPS down by any attribute and track it over time.
Multiple choice questions
You'll see the answer distribution — the share of responses for each option. Display it as a bar chart, a donut ring or a radar chart, whichever suits the story you're telling, and choose which labels appear on the chart.
Break the question down by segment and you can switch between segments to view a chart for each one.
Free-text questions
Comments are where the "why" lives. The Hive platform gives you three ways in:
- Sentiment analysis — how positive or negative each comment reads, so you can understand the tone of the feedback at a glance
- Keyword frequency — the words and phrases coming up most often across your comments
- Segment breakdown — sentiment analysis for each segment within an attribute, so you can see whether one group feels differently to another
Results segmentation questions
These are the questions your people answered about themselves as they responded. On this tab you'll see an overview of which options were offered and which are available to you as filters.
Their answers become filters in their own right — you'll find them under Survey-specific filters at the bottom of the filter sidebar.
Tracking a question over time
If you've asked the same question before, the Score over time graph shows you the direction of travel.
The Hive platform matches questions automatically. If you used a question from the Hive question bank, it's tracked for you. If you wrote a custom question, it's matched on the question text — so keeping the wording identical between surveys is what keeps your trend intact.
The graph includes surveys from the last three years. You can:
- Switch between full scale (0–10) and a zoomed-in view
- Hover over any data point to see more about it, or remove it
- Remove any survey you don't think belongs in the comparison — a reorganisation, a one-off pulse to a small group, anything that isn't a fair like-for-like
You can also overlay two lines:
- Trend — the overall direction of travel. A straight line of best fit through your scores. Sloping up means things are improving over time; sloping down means they're sliding.
- Average — the overall average across every survey shown. Points above the line scored better than usual; points below scored worse.
Turning results into action
If you have Hive Actions enabled, it's built into every question. You can pin a question you want to come back to, create an action directly from the result you're looking at, and get AI-powered suggested actions without leaving the tab.
Any action attached to a question that you own, follow or contribute to appears at the bottom of that question's page — so you can always see what's already being done before you start something new.
Don't have Hive Actions? Talk to your Customer Success contact about switching it on.
What you'll see based on your permissions
What appears on this tab depends on the access your organisation has given you. People managers see results for the people within their permitted scope, and depending on how your account is set up, you may not see results segmentation questions or free-text comments.
Confidentiality applies here as it does everywhere in the Hive platform. If a filtered group is too small to display safely, you'll see a message explaining why rather than a score. This protects individual anonymity — it isn't an error.
Sharing and downloading results
Every question can be printed or downloaded to PDF. The download captures the results section for the question you're currently viewing, so you get a clean, single-question output you can drop into a board pack, a team meeting or a manager briefing.
FAQs
Why has my filter sidebar disappeared? It collapses automatically when you open a question so your results get the full screen. Click the expand arrow to bring it back, change your filters, then collapse it again.
What's the quickest way to find my lowest scoring question? Sort the question list by score, and turn on Show previews so you can see the score against each question as you scan.
My question isn't showing any trend data, why? The Hive platform matches questions on the exact question text for custom questions, or automatically if you used the Hive question bank. If the wording changed even slightly between surveys, they'll be treated as two different questions.
Can I permanently remove a survey from the trend graph? Removing a survey affects your view only. It doesn't change the data or what anyone else sees.
Why can't I see any results for a particular segment? The group is below your organisation's confidentiality threshold. A message will explain this in place of the score. This is deliberate and protects individual anonymity.
Why can't I see the comments on a free-text question? Access to free-text comments depends on your permissions. Speak to your Hive administrator if you think you should have access.
Does the PDF include my filters? The download reflects the results section exactly as you're viewing it, for the question you're on.
