Managing Attributes Overview
Attributes are the fields used to segment your people in Hive — things like department, location, or tenure. They power your reporting, so it's worth taking a moment to set them up thoughtfully.
Creating an attribute
When creating a new attribute, start by giving it a clear, accurate name.
⚠️ This name will appear in reports and dashboards, so make sure it reflects exactly what it represents.
You'll also need to choose an attribute type:
|
Type |
What it's for |
|
Segment |
The most commonly used type. For reporting attributes like Department, Team, or Location. |
|
Date |
A date value per user e.g. Start Date or Date of Birth. |
|
Text |
Free-text per user e.g. Job Title or Payroll Number. For short strings, not paragraphs. |
|
|
An email address per user. |
|
Telephone |
A phone number per user. |
Attribute settings
When setting up an attribute, you can switch on any of the following options depending on how you want it to behave:
- Required for all users Every user must have a value for this attribute. Values can be set via the Users page, an HRIS integration, or the User Data Uploader. Use this for essential fields like name or date of birth.
- Usable as a filter Allows people to filter dashboards, reports, and lists by this attribute.
- Highlight in dropdowns Shows this attribute alongside a user's name in pickers and dropdowns — useful for attributes that help identify the right person quickly.
- Private Hides this attribute from other users. Only admins will be able to see it.
- Use for user verification Used to self-verify users into the Employee Homepage.
Managing segments within an attribute
Once an attribute is created, you can add new segments to it at any time. Segments can also be created automatically when new employee data is uploaded via the User Data Uploader.
If a segment is no longer relevant, you can retire it. Retired segments will still appear in historical survey and feedback data, but won't be used going forward.
⚠️ Before you can retire a segment, make sure it isn't set as highlighted in dropdowns or used for verification. Turn those settings off and save first, then retire the segment.
Retiring an attribute
When you no longer need an attribute entirely, you can retire it. The attribute will remain visible in past surveys and feedback for continuity, but it won't be applied to anything new going forward.
