Hive Survey Builder Checklist

Before launching your survey in Hive, use this checklist to make sure everything’s ready to go. From defining your purpose to checking recipients and email templates, it’ll help you avoid common setup mistakes and ensure your survey delivers meaningful results.

1. First things first, go back to the purpose

  • What’s the purpose of your survey?
Consider whether the questions you’re asking will give you the insight you’re looking for.
  • Are you asking questions that allow you to take action after the survey?
A survey without action can quickly become a pointless measuring exercise and even be damaging to your employees’ perceptions of the organisation—so make sure you’re prepared!

2. Survey builder: setting up your survey

  • Have you named your survey?
It seems obvious, but remember to give your survey a clear name, e.g. Health & Wellbeing Survey [Month & Year].
  • Have you selected the right survey category?
This will impact your results and link directly to your engagement summary and heatmaps.
  • Have you checked which questions are optional and which are required?
If you label a question that is fundamental to your survey  as “optional”, it could mean all the feedback from that  respondent is out of context and potentially wasted.
  • Have you correctly set up your recipient list?
When choosing who this survey will be sent to, remember:
    1. Adding separate demographics sends the survey to everyone in each group (e.g. all males AND everyone based in the North East).
    2. Adding multiple demographics under one group sends it to those matching all criteria (e.g. all males based in the North East).
  • Have managers got the right access?
Ensure only necessary managers can view specific results. Edit access in your user area.
  • Have you enabled Key Drivers?
Enable Key Drivers in the analysis tab to understand metric influences after survey closure.

3. Review your questions

  • Have you structured questions in a logical order?
A natural flow helps participants respond comfortably.
  • Have you selected the right question category?
This links to your engagement summary and heatmaps. If you would like an additional category added, please raise a ticket with Support.
  • Have you selected the right question type for your employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS) question?

eNPS measures how likely employees are to recommend your organisation, identifying true advocates. Our People Scientists recommend adding this to track engagement levels over time.

  • Do your questions speak directly to the individual (e.g. start with ‘I feel’, ‘My manager’, ‘We’, or ‘The team’)?
  • Have you used the right question types (closed, scaled, open)?
  • Have you avoided asking multiple questions in one?
This can confuse participants and skew results.
  • Have you checked for leading questions?
Avoid wording that influences answers, e.g. ‘I consider that our culture is stronger when people are working at the office.’
